Grocery shopping for clean foods can be one of the most daunting tasks. I can't count how many times I've come home from the grocery store with nothing for dinner! The most helpful tips I've learned are:
Don't go shopping while hungry!
Make a list
Have an idea of what meals you are going to make
Don't be afraid to stock your freezer (frozen veggies, meatless options, frozen greens)
Don't forget to stock your pantry (canned beans, taco kits, rice and nut butters)
It is easier to make healthy decisions when you start with a solid plan and shopping list. I like to keep things simple in the kitchen by using wholesome ingredients.
1. Cauliflower Rice
Don't be afraid to stock your freezer! There are so many organic frozen foods to help you prepare a quick and healthy dinner.
2. Organic Apples
One of my favorite things for breakfast is apple slices and peanut butter.
3. Organic Tofu
I have gotten into the habit of always grabbing a pack of tofu. Tofu can be extremely versatile, check our post for 5 ways to prepare tofu (coming soon!).
4. Garbanzo Beans
Season and bake these protein packed beans for an easy snack or salad topping.
5. Arugula
Arugula is one of my favorite greens to add to the cart. Just add a little lemon, salt and pepper for a simple yet delicious side salad!
6. Avocado
I only get one or two avocados at a time. Nothing is more sad than avocados going bad before you've had a chance to use them!
7. Gardein
Gardein, found in the freezer section. It is a fantastic vegan brand with several mock meat options. My favorites are the meatless meatballs, the crispy fingers and the beefless ground.
8. Sweet potatoes
Baked, seasoned with salt, pepper and cinnamon, it's a perfect side dish.
9. Black Beans
Don't be afraid to stock your pantry! One of my favorite ways to eat black beans are with sweet potatoes, see my recipe here.
10. Non Dairy Milk
I have never liked cows milk! But I always have a non dairy milk in my refrigerator. Usually depending on what's on sale. There are so many options these days, almond milk, rice milk, oat milk, cashew milk, macadamia milk - give any of these a try!
11. Organic Frozen Spinach
Instead of buying a lot of fresh leafy greens, I get one or two at a time, otherwise I find they go bad before I get a chance to use them. Organic frozen spinach gives you the ability to make green smoothies without the pressure of having to use it all up before it goes bad.
12. Organic Bananas
I always get organic bananas, ironically I don't usually eat the bananas fresh, I let them ripen on my counter and freeze them once slightly browned to add them to smoothies.
13. Pasta Sauce
Keep that pantry stocked! The easiest dinner: spaghetti, sauce, Gardein meatless meatballs or beefless ground. Your meatless Monday dinner is ready!
14. Coconut Milk
Canned coconut milk makes for a great base for homemade curries and soups.
15. Taco Kit
Taco Tuesday? Taco any day. To keep these as healthy as possible I don't use the packaged seasonings that come with these as they are full of preservatives and sodium but tacos are everyones favorite and such an easy dinner.
